Stetson Beacon Methodist Services for Children and Families (MSCF) Beacon Community Center, located at the John B. Stetson Middle School in Kensington, serves more than 200 children in After School and Family Preservation programs. The Beacon is a bustling community center that offers customized programs for children and their families. Designed to provide fun, educational, creative and athletic activities after school, into the evening and on the weekend when children are most likely to be left on their own. A minimal fee is charged for certain programs at the Beacon, but programs are open to all members of the community.
The After School Program is offered to students from all surrounding elementary and middle schools. The students receive homework assistance and are offered the opportunity to participate in various enrichment programs consisting of computer learning, sports, arts and crafts, dance, self-esteem workshops and much more throughout the year. The children participate in a monthly ceremony that acknowledges perfect attendance, homework heroes, student of the month, and birthdays, as a means of encouraging the students to perform to the best of their abilities. The students receive an award and prize for their efforts and accomplishments.
We offer a Youth Council program for students ages 14 - 21. The Youth Council members develop leadership skills by utilizing their strengths and communication skills. By engaging in classroom activities, workshops, community service, event planning, fundraising and other activities, meant to engage and attract members of the community, as well as other organizations, students participate in and help the entire community.
The Family Preservation evening program provides a safe haven and support for teens and older youth in the community. This program offers basketball, computer learning, chess club, dance, drama and much more. Other programs consist of GED and ESL (English as a Second Language) classes. Monthly parent meetings offer a forum for parents to share concerns, ideas and strategies and build stronger relationships with their children, school officials and each other. Parents are encouraged to volunteer and become a part of their children’s educational growth at the Beacon. During the summer, the Beacon hosts a Summer Camp for members of the community which offers a wide range of programs. The Beacon Program offers open enrollment.
