HISTORY
Methodist Services for Children and Families, formerly known as Simpson Enrichment Services(BASES) serves children, families, and individuals in the tradition of the United Methodist heritage, providing much needed programs to the communities we serve. Annually, Methodist Services provides services to over 1,100 children, youth, and families, both on our 21acre campus and through community-based program in Bangor, PA and Kensington section of Philadelphia. As part of its mission, Methodist Services strives to meet the ever-changing need of the community by providing desirable and innovative services to its clients.
Methodist Services was born out of a rich history that dates back to 1879 when the Methodist Episcopal Orphanage first opened its doors. Founded by Mrs. Bishop Simpson, the initial enrollment of the orphanage was just three children, but grew to such a size that expansion was eventually necessary. Realizing this need, Mrs. Simpson convinced Colonel Joseph Bennett to donate a portion of his property located at Monument and Belmont Avenues, along Fairmount Park allowing for the growth of the orphanage.
By 1913, enrollment at the orphanage reached 193 children, and as time passed, it became apparent that children were in need of more intensive services due to the increase in unstable family settings. This realization brought about the hiring of the first social worker in 1955, who assisted in the placement and supervision of children. This change also sparked the transition of the institution from being a volunteer-operated orphanage to a professionally staffed organization named Methodist Home for Children (MHC).
In 1986, it became evident that another change was needed in order to better serve clients and the community at large. Methodist Home for Children responded, developing multi-service outreach programs and phasing out residential care. This change ultimately led to the creation of Bennett and Simpson Enrichment Services (named for the orphanage's founder and first benefactor) in 1994, as its own corporation.
Today, we continue to provide quality programs and services, but on July 1,2001 our name became Methodist Services for Children and Families. Under this new name we will go on meeting the needs of the community, in the tradition of our Wesleyan values and the original Methodist Home for Children
